Networking: inspection

The network is how your machine talks to others: to servers on the internet, to machines nearby, even to itself. In this lesson you do not configure the network, you inspect it: you look at the machine's network cards, their addresses, and which programs are waiting for connections. It is all read-only, so nothing can break.

The sandbox has no way out to the internet, and that does not matter: a machine always has its own network, and that is what we look at.

Three words to understand

An interface is a network card, a door into some network. It can be physical (a network port, Wi-Fi) or virtual. Each interface has a name: eth0, ens3 or lo.

An IP address is the machine's address on a networ
