Terms of Service
Last updated: 2026-07-08
These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of Linuxlab.io, the online Linux education platform operated by Automation and Progress LLC, a Florida limited liability company doing business as Linuxlab ("Linuxlab", "we", "us", or "our"). The service is available at https://linuxlab.io, and the interactive sandbox runs on a separate host at sandbox.linuxlab.io (together, the "Service").
Please read these Terms carefully. They include an acceptable use policy for a compute sandbox that runs code you provide (Section 6), a disclaimer of warranties (Section 15), a limitation of liability (Section 16), and an indemnity (Section 17). By using the Service, you agree to these Terms.
English is the authoritative language of these Terms. A Russian translation is provided for convenience. If there is any conflict between the two versions, the English version controls.
1. Agreement
By accessing or using Linuxlab.io, you agree to be bound by these Terms. When you create an account, you affirm your agreement by an explicit action ("I agree"), and we record that you agreed.
If you do not agree to these Terms, do not use the Service.
These Terms incorporate by reference our Privacy Policy and our Cookie Notice. By using the Service you also agree to those documents.
2. The Service
Linuxlab is an online platform for learning Linux. It has two main parts.
- Reading platform. A multi-part Linux textbook (Parts I through IV), available in Russian and English. When you are signed in, the platform records your reading progress so you can resume where you left off. It tracks your position in the text and, for embedded media, the last timestamp you reached. This is a resume feature only. It is not a score, a ranking, or a game.
- Interactive hands-on course (the "Sandbox"). When you are signed in and the feature is enabled, you can run real Linux shell commands in a private, temporary Linux container that belongs to your session. The container is based on a standard Ubuntu image. You get one dedicated container per session, with a
studentuser that can usesudowithout a password inside that container. That administrative access applies only inside your own confined container. The container has no access to the internet, no access to the host machine, and no access to any other user's container. Each session has a fixed time limit of about 30 minutes and is destroyed when it ends, when you disconnect, or when it expires.
Access. The reading platform is available after you create an account and, where required, verify your email. Sandbox access additionally requires that the sandbox feature is turned on. We may turn features on or off.
Availability. The Service is provided on a best-effort basis. We do not guarantee that the Service will be uninterrupted, that any feature will remain available, or that it will operate without error. We may add, change, limit, suspend, or remove features at any time, with or without notice.
Price. The Service is provided free of charge at launch. If we introduce paid courses in the future, the terms in Section 11 will apply. We do not offer subscriptions, recurring billing, or automatic renewal.
3. Eligibility
You must be at least 13 years old to use the Service. By using Linuxlab, you confirm that you meet this age requirement.
The Service is a general-audience service. It is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we learn that we have collected personal information from a child under 13, we will delete it. See the Privacy Policy for more.
If you use the Service on behalf of an organization, you represent that you are authorized to accept these Terms for that organization.
4. Accounts and Security
To use most features you need an account. You create an account with an email address and a password, or by signing in with Google (the email of your Google account becomes your account email). We do not ask for your name, phone number, date of birth, or postal address.
Where email verification is required, you will need to confirm your email address before you can read authenticated content.
You are responsible for:
- keeping your password confidential;
- all activity that happens under your account; and
- telling us promptly if you believe your account has been accessed without your permission.
You must provide accurate account information and keep it current. You may not share your account, sell it, or transfer it to anyone else. We may suspend or close an account that is used in violation of these Terms.
5. Your Content
Some parts of the Service let you submit content. When you send feedback, a rating, or a comment, you are submitting content that our operators may read and reply to in order to run and improve the Service and to help you.
You keep ownership of the content you submit. You grant us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to use, store, reproduce, and process that content for the purpose of operating, maintaining, supporting, and improving the Service, and for responding to you. This license lasts as long as we retain the content and ends when we delete it, except where we must keep it to meet a legal obligation or to resolve a dispute.
You are responsible for the content you submit. You represent that you have the right to submit it and that submitting it does not violate any law or any third party's rights. Do not submit content that is unlawful, that infringes someone else's rights, or that contains another person's private information without their permission.
We do not record the commands you type in the Sandbox, your keystrokes, your terminal output, or your shell history. See Section 6 and the Privacy Policy for what the Sandbox does and does not store.
6. Acceptable Use of the Sandbox
The Sandbox runs commands that you provide. It is real compute, and you are responsible for what you run in it. This section is important. Read it before you use the Sandbox.
Permitted use. Use the Sandbox to learn Linux and to practice the exercises in the course.
Prohibited use. You may not use the Sandbox to:
- Mine cryptocurrency or run any blockchain, mining, or value-extraction workload.
- Attack, scan, probe, or disrupt any system you do not own or are not authorized to test. This includes port scanning, penetration testing, denial-of-service or distributed denial-of-service activity, and sending traffic to third-party systems.
- Gain unauthorized access to any account, network, computer, data, or system.
- Host, store, or distribute illegal or infringing material, including child sexual abuse material, malware, or pirated content.
- Abuse resources. Do not run long-lived daemons, proxies, tunnels, bots, scrapers, or crawlers, and do not attempt to exceed the session, time, or compute limits.
- Break or probe the isolation of the environment. Do not attempt to escape your container, reach the host machine, reach another user's container, or defeat any security or resource control.
The administrative access you have inside your container applies only inside that container. It does not authorize you to access anything else.
Reality of the Sandbox. The Sandbox is ephemeral. It is provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis. Your container and everything in it are destroyed when your session ends, and we do not preserve, snapshot, back up, or restore anything you create there. Do not put anything in the Sandbox that you need to keep.
Monitoring and enforcement. We may monitor for security and abuse, and we may throttle, suspend, or terminate any workload or session, with or without notice, to protect the Service, other users, or third parties. We may investigate suspected violations and take appropriate legal action.
7. Intellectual Property
The Service, including the Linuxlab name, the site design, the source code, the user interface, the textbook, the course materials, and other content we provide, belongs to us or our licensors. It is protected by intellectual property laws.
We grant you a limited, personal, non-transferable, non-exclusive license to access and use the Service for your own learning. You may not copy, modify, distribute, sell, publish, or create derivative works from our content or our software, except as these Terms allow or as the law permits.
Content you submit and any work you create in the Sandbox are not covered by this section. See Section 5.
8. Copyright and DMCA
We respect intellectual property rights and expect our users to do the same.
If you believe that material available through the Service infringes your copyright, you may send a notice to our designated agent. Your notice must include the information required by the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (17 U.S.C. Section 512(c)(3)), including:
- your physical or electronic signature;
- identification of the copyrighted work you claim was infringed;
- identification of the material you claim is infringing and where it is located;
- your contact information;
- a statement that you have a good-faith belief that the use is not authorized; and
- a statement, under penalty of perjury, that the information in your notice is accurate and that you are the owner or are authorized to act on the owner's behalf.
Designated agent for copyright notices:
Send your notice through the feedback form inside your account (Write from your account), addressed to the Linuxlab copyright agent.
If we remove material in response to a notice, we will make a reasonable effort to notify the person who provided it, who may submit a counter-notice as allowed by the DMCA. If a valid counter-notice is received, we may restore the material in 10 to 14 business days unless the complaining party files a court action.
Repeat infringers. We will terminate, in appropriate circumstances, the accounts of users who repeatedly infringe copyright.
9. Third-Party Content and Links
The Service may embed or link to content hosted by third parties, such as video and terminal-recording players. Those third parties operate under their own terms and privacy policies. We do not control them and are not responsible for their content or practices. Your use of embedded or linked third-party content is at your own risk.
10. Privacy
Our handling of personal information is described in our Privacy Policy and our Cookie Notice. Please review them to understand what we collect and how we use it. By using the Service, you agree to the practices described there.
11. Payments (Not Currently Offered)
Linuxlab does not currently charge for the Service, and no purchase is required to use it.
If we introduce paid courses in the future, the following will apply, and this section will be updated before any charge is made:
- Courses will be sold as a one-time purchase per course, with no time limit on access to a purchased course.
- We do not offer subscriptions, recurring billing, or automatic renewal.
- Before any charge, we will clearly disclose the price and what you are buying, and we will obtain your express agreement to the charge.
- We will publish a refund and cancellation policy before charging begins.
- Card and payment details, if any, will be handled by a third-party payment processor and will not be stored by Linuxlab.
12. Termination
You may stop using the Service at any time.
We may suspend or terminate your access to the Service, in whole or in part, with or without notice, if you violate these Terms, if we are required to by law, or to protect the Service, other users, or third parties. We may also stop offering the Service or any feature.
To close your account or request deletion of your account data, contact us through the in-account feedback form (see Section 21).
Sections that by their nature should survive termination will survive, including Sections 5, 7, 8, and 14 through 20.
13. Changes to the Service
We are actively developing the Service. We may change, add, or remove features, content, and functionality at any time. We are not liable to you for any change to the Service or for the removal of any feature or content.
14. Export and Sanctions
You may not use the Service in violation of any applicable export control or economic sanctions law. You represent that you are not located in, and are not a national or resident of, any country or region subject to a comprehensive embargo, and that you are not on any government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
15. Disclaimer of Warranties
THE SERVICE, INCLUDING THE SANDBOX, IS PROVIDED ON AN "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE" BASIS, WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED. TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, WE DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES, INCLUDING THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT.
WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE SERVICE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, TIMELY, ERROR-FREE, OR SECURE, THAT DEFECTS WILL BE CORRECTED, OR THAT THE SERVICE OR THE SERVERS THAT RUN IT ARE FREE OF HARMFUL COMPONENTS. WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT ANY DATA, PROGRESS, OR WORK YOU CREATE IN THE SANDBOX WILL BE PRESERVED. YOU USE THE SERVICE AT YOUR OWN RISK.
16. Limitation of Liability
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, LINUXLAB AND ITS OPERATORS WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR ANY LOSS OF PROFITS, DATA, USE, OR GOODWILL, ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO YOUR USE OF, OR INABILITY TO USE, THE SERVICE, WHETHER BASED ON WARRANTY, CONTRACT, TORT, OR ANY OTHER LEGAL THEORY, AND WHETHER OR NOT WE WERE ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ALL CLAIMS RELATED TO THE SERVICE WILL NOT EXCEED THE GREATER OF (A) THE TOTAL AMOUNT YOU PAID US FOR THE SERVICE IN THE 12 MONTHS BEFORE THE EVENT GIVING RISE TO THE CLAIM, OR (B) ONE HUNDRED U.S. DOLLARS (USD $100).
Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability that cannot be excluded or limited under applicable law, including liability for fraud, gross negligence, willful misconduct, or death or personal injury caused by negligence.
Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion or limitation of certain warranties or liabilities. In those jurisdictions, our liability is limited to the maximum extent permitted by law, and some of the above limitations may not apply to you.
17. Indemnification
To the extent permitted by law, you agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless Linuxlab and its operators from and against any claims, damages, liabilities, losses, and expenses, including reasonable legal fees, arising out of or related to:
- your use of the Service, including your use of the Sandbox;
- content you submit;
- your violation of these Terms; or
- your violation of any law or any third party's rights.
This obligation is significant because the Sandbox runs code that you provide.
18. Governing Law and Venue
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Florida, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules.
You and Linuxlab agree that any dispute arising out of or related to these Terms or the Service will be brought exclusively in the state or federal courts located in Florida, and you consent to the personal jurisdiction of those courts.
Class action waiver. To the extent permitted by law, you and Linuxlab agree that each may bring claims against the other only in an individual capacity, and not as a plaintiff or class member in any class or representative action. If this waiver is found unenforceable as to a particular claim, that claim will be severed and the remainder of this section will remain in effect.
19. Changes to These Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. When we do, we will change the "Last updated" date at the top.
If we make a material change, we will give reasonable notice before it takes effect, for example by email or by a notice in the Service. Your continued use of the Service after the changes take effect means that you accept the revised Terms. If you do not agree to the revised Terms, stop using the Service.
20. General
- Severability. If any provision of these Terms is found unenforceable, the rest remains in effect, and the unenforceable provision will be limited to the smallest extent needed to make it enforceable.
- No waiver. Our failure to enforce any provision is not a waiver of our right to enforce it later.
- Assignment. You may not assign these Terms without our written consent. We may assign them in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets.
- Force majeure. We are not liable for any failure or delay caused by events beyond our reasonable control.
- Entire agreement. These Terms, together with the Privacy Policy and the Cookie Notice, are the entire agreement between you and us about the Service and replace any earlier agreement on the same subject.
21. Contact
