Chapter 2

How to get Linux

Updated July 3, 2026

To learn, you need a Linux system you are not afraid to break. Your own working machine with Windows or macOS will not do: mistakes in commands have to be safe. You can install Linux yourself in half an hour, and there are three working paths below. Or you can install nothing and work in our sandbox right in the browser - let's start there.

The fastest start: our sandbox

If you would rather not install anything, or you want to start right now, open our sandbox. It is a real Linux in your browser, already set up: nothing to download or install. The prepared lessons live there too - the commands from the book run for real, and each step is checked automatically, so you see at once whether you got it right.
